Richard Gage who was more fondly known as “Iowa Blackie” was born in Charles City, Iowa Sept. 21, 1948. At the age of 14 years old he caught his first freight train from New Hampton to Oelwein, Iowa. He was passionate about railroading and lived the life of a hobo. He regualrly attended the National Hobo Convention in Britt, Iowa and was elected the King of Hobos with Queen Blue Moon at the 1933 Convention.
